The Cruising Mecca, Georgetown Bahamas

If your looking for a place to cruise where there are hundreds of other sailboats and a social community comparable to a small Suburban town, Georgetown is your place!

With around the clock social events and gorgeous hiking trails there is always something to keep you busy. In fact, each morning at 8am on the VHF radio, there was a organized “cruisers net” where you could find local information if you were new to the area, hear about social events going on, buy or sell or Exchange items or ask for help with a repair on your boat. We found out that people were so helpful and would go out of their way to help another fellow boater out. We actually ended up buying nautical charts for the abc islands for $10 from another boating couple!

We dropped the hook in front of “chat and chill” which is a private island beach dedicated to volleyball and socializing. You can grab a drink and some food or just hang out to chat with other cruisers. Here we met many other young couples doing the same thing as us (also with dogs!) some who trekked the same course south we are planning.. so it was great to get their input and experience on their journey.

Across the channel was a restaurant patio on the Oceanside where a bunch of sailor musicians regularity gathered to play music. The food was great, we had fresh conch which is famous across the Bahamas. Here we met a couple that had been cruising for 20+ years and had lots of interesting tales to tell!

On the other side of the channel was the village of Georgetown. This community completely catered to cruisers with free RO water and trash disposal all dockside (all other places in Bahamas and Florida charge for these services) We met a Bahamian named Todd who loved Bella and often would show us where things are so he could take her for a stroll!

We took advantage of the beautiful trails and hiked up to the town monument. We also found a trail where the top of the island overlooked the Atlantic on one side and Georgetown on the other. We setup a picnic dinner at the top enjoyed a gourmet pasta dinner and red wine! It was sooo nice!

In the evening, we went to flip flop beach where we heard people gathered for a campfire and shared snacks! There was a cool tiki hut and bar on the beach built by a previous cruiser where we could set up. Soon enough 20 or so people along with kids and dogs where gathered around the campfire telling tales of the sea and their adventures!

On our final day there, we met our new friends on the beach on the morning for a CrossFit workout followed by a swim in the refreshing waters. At night, we went across the bay to a restaurant and bar where we enjoyed the most tasty burgers and cold beers! The bar also had swings instead of bar stools!

We exchanged contacts and said our goodbyes to our friends to head further south to Clarence town. A few more stops and we would be ready to make the passage to Dominican republic!
