After setting out from Santa Marta at 4am, we watched in awe at the sunset over the horizon as we sailed away. The whole sky was full of various hues of pink, orange and reds spanning far and wide. We didn’t get any photos as we decided it would be best to live in the moment. The sail was an interesting one as we needed to cross the mouth of the Magdalena River which usually brought rough seas and large amounts of debris. The first thing we noticed was a significant difference in the water colour that went from a dark blue to a yucky brown. We saw a few smaller logs and a few bigger waves but nothing to serious.
After arriving in Pureto Vallero, we enjoyed our typical post passage meal of homemade french fries and cold beer. Not long after arriving we were visited by the Armada (coast guard) who wanted to perform a random search of the boat for drugs. Once satisfied, they verified our paperwork and were on their way.
We spent the following days relaxing and swimming glad to be away from the big city and in a quiet place. In fact, we liked it so much, we decided to celebrate our first wedding anniversary there! We made reservations at the islands only restaurant with an Italian chef. We enjoyed local delicacies and each others company while sipping a few cocktails.
Finally it was time to go and we headed to Cartagena to spend a few months and await the visit of Steve’s parents! Stay tuned!
