Fresh Garden at Sea

At times fresh produce is difficult to find when you are traveling remote areas. A fresh garden while at sea adds a tasty gourmet touch to a meal prepared from dry pasta as well as an appealing sight of live plants on the boat.

We are growing fresh basil and chives which we bought at a market in New Providence. The sprouts and green onions are more of a homemade creation... The green onions were started from the roots of organic green onions we bought at a fresh market. Normally you would cut the roots off and throw them out however I learned about planting them in soil and they will replenish themselves for a renewable supply of green onions! The sprouts are made from mung beans which you originally soak in fresh water for the first night and then rinse and drain each day after. You cover them to keep them from browning so they stay a crisp white. The soil for all the plants were sourced from a nearby creek in a trail off of jaws beach! We often water them with recycled water from boiled pasta or rice. This water actually originated from the ocean and is made by our on board water maker. We keep all the plants in filtered sunlight inside the boat so they are not exposed to the salty air outside.

So there you have it!
