Barahona has the Best Gas Station!

Barahona was a very interesting Dominican city to explore. Not yet touched by tourism, we had a chance to see how the average person lived. At the entrance to the town off the waterfront was an extremely bustling gas station that was packed with people, motos and filled with loud music. One thing we quickly discovered about Dominicans is they like their music and they like it LOUD! We went into the gas station and grabbed an ice cold large Presidente Cervasa and took it to go to explore the town. (you really appreciate cold drinks once on land as boat fridges so not tend to work as well at sea).

English speaking folks were very limited due to to the limited access to tourists. We made our way around town with the basic Spanish that we know and was able to get a SIM card as well as Data. We walked into a serious of narrow crowed alleys which made up the largest fresh produce market we have ever seen. We filled our backpacks with fresh tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, onions and avocados. This was a special treat coming from the Bahamas as fresh veggies were often hard to come by in the out island areas!! In the same place, Steve got his hair cut at a local barbershop. What was so unique about this barber shop is that is was squeezed in between a man who was selling and chopping fresh coconuts and a stand that was hanging fresh meat! Not likely following Western society food standards but hey. When in Rome...

In the evening we found a local hot spot for dinner and enjoyed some Dominican delights. Here is where we met some kids that Bella enjoyed doing tricks for in exchange for potato chips. Later we headed to the town open air bar adjacent to the busy gas station where the locals arrived after work to unwind and dance to some blaring music that played out into the streets.  While here, we were also able to fill our boat with groceries at really reasonable prices! We will miss you Barahona and we hope you enjoyed our time there as much as we did!
